Hands of Artisans: Cultures & Crafts of Laos, and the Impact of Modernity

Friday April 26, 2019
7.00 PM- 9.00 PM SGT
Free Admission
Venue: The Collective

“Cultures and Crafts of Laos, and the impact of Modernity” is an exploration through the different ethnic communities in Laos and how their handicraft production has been impacted by the modernisation of Laos, both in positive and negative ways. Through this talk you will appreciate the cultural diversity of Laos and it’s rich history, displayed in textiles and other medium.

About our speaker
Australian-born, Emi Weir, has been residing in Luang Prabang since 2009. After twenty years in tourism, she came looking for somewhere she could use her skills and create a life around the tourism experience.

In 2010, the idea for Ma Té Sai, a fair trade store, was born and with the help of Clem, a French women working in development in Vientiane, they sourced artisanal products from all around Laos, with the aim of pushing the tourist dollar further to those in need, and also of helping women in agricultural areas to support families with extra income.
Ma Té Sai grew into a social enterprise. In 2013 she raised funds to train women in two Taileu cotton weaving
villages north of Luang Prabang to sew, and now Ma Té Sai designs products, woven and sewn in the village.

Since then Ma Té Sai has worked with several agencies to role out this village-based production model further and increases income for rural women through handicraft. Developing new designs in line with their cultural heritage not only preserve skills but gives them access to the international market. In 2018 Ma Té Sai incorporated in Singapore, expanding their retail network beyond Laos.
